CLOGS RECEIVES COMMISSIONING/TOURING AWARD
IN DESERTO (SmokeCreek)

Chamber Music America awards 2003 NEA/CMA Special Commissioning Award to Clogs

Clogs is the recipient of the 2003 NEA/CMA Special Commissioning Award, made possible by a generous gift from an anonymous donor with matching funds from the National Endowment for the Arts. Funds for this commission have been provided by Chamber Music America's Commissioning Program, supported by The National Endowment for the Arts, and the Chamber Music America Endowment Fund.

With this award, Clogs has commissioned Ingram Marshall, who composed IN DESERTO (SmokeCreek) for the ensemble. Mr. Marshall describes his piece as follows:

"As the title suggests, this piece has to do with images of the desert. I was in Nevada a few years ago, and it dawned on me how similar is the ocean to the desert. A year ago when I was teaching a course on Sibelius, the gripping music of his Allotarret (the Oceanides) crept into my consciousness. His piece, which is based on a germinating melody, has been haunting me ever since, and I thought it would be an interesting idea to take a melodic idea about the ocean and turn it into one about the desert."

The Special Commissioning Award supports Clogs' US touring of IN DESERTO (SmokeCreek) through December 2005.
